AWD vs. 4WD: What’s the Difference?

2022 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X Rear View

If you’re shopping for a new vehicle, you might wonder about the difference between AWD and 4WD. Is AWD the same as 4WD? The answer is no; they’re not the same. Which option is better for you? Learn more about AWD vs. 4WD below, then start shopping our new Buick and GMC selection for the right model for you!

What is AWD?

All-wheel drive is a system that directs torque from the engine to all four wheels by way of the differentials. There’s more than one AWD system, including full-time and part-time AWD. Full-time AWD systems transfer torque to both axles constantly. On the other hand, part-time AWD systems keep tabs on road conditions and adjust when it’s sensible to transfer torque to the front axle only.

What is 4WD?

Four-wheel drive is also known as “4×4.” The main difference between 4WD and AWD is that 4WD systems transfer power to the front and rear axles — like AWD — but they’re also able to adjust power transfers between the left and right wheels. Four-wheel drive systems are known for their off-road prowess and are popular on vehicles that were built to venture off the beaten path.

Which is Better: AWD or 4WD?

Is AWD better than 4WD — or vice versa? The right choice for you depends on your needs and driving goals. One drivetrain isn’t inherently better than the other. Typically, AWD is better for drivers who just want a little extra traction during bad weather, while 4WD is a better fit for drivers who need a rugged, off-road-ready vehicle. AWD and 4WD can be found on Buick and GMC models, so once you figure out which drivetrain you want, we can help you choose the right model for you!
