Horsepower, top speed, and 0-60 mph acceleration time are all fairly straightforward specs; horsepower refers to the power of an engine, top speed is how fast a car can go, and 0-60 acceleration time is how quickly a new Buick, GMC can accelerate. But, when the question, “What is torque in cars?” comes up, it’s not always so easy to answer. Torque Car Definition

Torque is the twisting force that’s generated when the engine is operating at its full power. All engines produce both horsepower and torque. Today’s cars and trucks generate around 100 to 400 lb-ft of torque, on average. The pistons within an engine create torque as they move backward and forward on the crankshaft, which rotates it and generates torque. Afterward, the torque is sent to the car’s wheels via the drivetrain and transmission. 

What is Considered “Good” Torque in a Car?

Again, most of today’s mainstream, everyday cars produce 100 to 400 lb-ft of torque. Typically, cars with smaller non-turbocharged gas engines have lower amounts of torque. Higher amounts of torque are usually more desirable than low amounts, because higher torque aligns with the way average Houston drivers drive. 

Usually, engines that produce low torque are less fuel-efficient; they have to work harder than high-torque engines. Higher torque also corresponds to a more easy-going driving experience, fewer gear changes, and a faster acceleration from low revs in a high gear.

There are a lot of differences between horsepower and torque, but they can be broken down into five main points: 

1. What They Measure: Torque measures the rotational force of the crankshaft within your car’s engine. Horsepower measures the power being transferred to the wheels from the engine. 
2. How They Affect Acceleration: Through twisting force, torque gets the car rolling when you accelerate; horsepower is what maintains the speed as you cruise around Channelview. 
3. Towing: Torque is what matters as far as towing is concerned. If you need to tow a camper, boat, or jet ski around Houston, you need a vehicle with plenty of torque to get the job done. 
4. Vehicle Performance: Horsepower is a snapshot of a vehicle’s speed and power; the higher the horsepower, the faster and more powerful the engine. All vehicles rely on torque, though, but should ideally have a solid balance between the two for the best possible driving experience. 
5. Fuel Efficiency: Cars with higher horsepower burn fuel more quickly, whether they’re accelerating or being driven normally. Vehicles with more low-end torque, on the other hand, burn fuel more slowly.
