GVWR Meaning, Classes, & Regulations

GVWR refers to the maximum loaded weight under which a truck can safely operate as outlined by the OEM. If you’re searching for a commercial truck, it’s important to be aware of the different classes and regulations involving GVWR:

  • Vehicles Over 6,000 Pounds GVWR: These types of vehicles aren’t allowed on certain roads, so make sure you’re aware of the restrictions in your area before driving.
  • Vehicles Over 8,500 Pounds GVWR: Vehicles with this GVWR have been required to carry public liability coverage since 1980.
  • Vehicles Between 8,500-26,000 Pounds GVWR: In many cases, these vehicles require a commercial driver’s license (CDL) to drive, or a non-commercial Class A or B license. That’s largely because these vehicles include models like large passenger vans or trucks that transport potentially dangerous materials.
  • Vehicles Over 26,000 GVWR: To operate a vehicle with this GVWR, you’ll definitely need a CDL or a Class A/B driver’s license. These vehicles include tractor-trailers like a Freightliner or Durastar.
